SCX 4100 on Kanotix 2005-04 at Parallel Port

Hello all out there,

Hints to get this machine working under different distros are mostly pointed to connection at the USB-Ports. Printing from parallel port ist reported rarely. For some reasons I had to use the connection per parallel port.
First I tried the samsung driver packages from -156 over -165 to the new Unified Driver. ALL messed up the (debian-based) system; printing was not possible. A look into the comments on linuxprinting.org showed that samsung does really strange things to the used libs.
Because I'm not able to fix the samsung scripts and libs I tried it the simple way:
1. extract from the samsung UNIFIED DRIVER package into a temporary folder:
rastertosamsungpcl
rastertosamsungspl
rastertosamsungsplc
scx4100.ppd
(I dont know which of the rasterto* ist really necessary, the .ppd names the
*spl version.)
2. copy the rasterto* to /usr/lib/cups/filter
3. ark the scx4100.ppd to scx4100.ppd.gz
4. copy the scx4100.ppd.gz to /usr/share/cups/model/foomatic-ppds/samsung
5. copy scx4100.ppd to /etc/cups/ppd
6. copy scx4100.ppd to /usr/share/cups/model
The last two steps maybe unnecessary - I didn't try to find out.

This works: The scx can be defined as Printer using localhost:631 or the KDE-Tool from Menu. The Printer is shown connected to the parallel port.

The printer prints and with kprinter you can reach all the preferences. The printer test page (started in the printer comes without any errors or problems.

BUT: If I start a print job from any program (OOo.org 1.07 to 2.0, Kate, KGhostview etc.), the page preview shows a complete side, but the firt 17mm from the top of the sheet are _not_ printed. The paper definitions in the ppd file seem to be ok. Until now I could not find any reason for this behavior.

Any hints are highly welcome.

Teddy

See my posts to other users with similar problems in the Samsung forum here. Your problem likely can be solved by properly installing the right dependencies for your flavor of Linux BEFORE installing Samsung's driver (unified driver configurator) package. Uninstall it (comes with an uninstall script) and install the right/current needed dependencies, the re-install the Samsung driver package. Also, reconfigure, if necessary, the printer protocol you are using.

@PinBalWyz
As far as I can find out all the packets you mentioned in some other posts are installed without dependency problems. Your second suggestition is to use socket//<portnumber> as device URI instead of parallel:/dev/lp0. I tried that but the printer disappears.I don't want to use the mfp-construction.
As I said: the printer prints without problems or hangs. My only problem is that the first 17mm on the top margin are cut off.
Meanwhile I found that this does not occour with .pdf-files which are generated somewhere on the net.

Good news...
The problem seems to be solved.
After some trying with localhost:631 and changing entries in the ppd-file all my printouts are without failure. The first hint came from the cups printer test page and the numbers to the size of the imageable area, which belonged to Letter format instead of A4, which I actually use. A control in kprinter and the printer definition modul in Kcontrolcenter showed that A4 was used. The next step was to modify the scx4100.ppd. You have to change the entry "Letter" to "A4" unter *DefaultPageSize:
*DefaultImageableArea:
*DefaultPaperDimension:
Then I tried to setup via localhost:631 and voila! The printer prints on the foll A4 sheet with 0.17inch HWMargin.

The tests showed that only two files from the Unified Driver Package are really needed to get the SCX4100 printing unter Kanotix 2005-04:
1. scx4100.ppd (like in my origin post but don't copy to /etc/cups/ppd !!!)
2. rastertosamsungspl (like in my origin post)

Hope someone finds that helpful.

I used the configuration mentioned above not only on Kanotix in different versions but on Knoppix 3.7 and 5.1.1 and Sidux Tartaros to Gaia without problems. Therefore you should not encounter problems.
I've no idea why you cannot open and search the cd resp. the folders. You can download the Unified Driver from the Samsung Site instead and extract the files named above.
It would help if you describe your problems precisely.
